Health-fication of the Home

Did you know that the air inside your home is typically even more polluted than air outside, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says. Research shows that we spend most of our time indoors, which is all the more reason to start cleaning our indoor air.

So what ways can you health-ify your home? Santise every person that walks in the door?

No - not really.. But there are ways that you can neutralize germs through the house. Here are my top tips for a thriving home - or my Health-fication of the home.

  • Open up the windows and let fresh air inside - bonus points for having a light and airy home!

  • Buy house plants to improve indoor air quality, according to a study published by the American Society for Horticultural Science - for example, spider plants are effective at reducing benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene!

  • Leave the shoes at the door - so they don't tread germs through the home - like pesticides, dander, poop, other nasties that lay on the ground!

  • When cooking, use high smoke point oils - so that the odour doesnt stink out the house - use avocado, peanut, safflower, canola, corn and sunflower oil, and if you prefer the taste of olive oil, you can use light olive oil

  • Burn dried sage around the home - you can smudge the home and kill germs at the same time

  • Burn essential oils as opposed to incense. Therapuetic grade + high quality blends are perfect! Ones I prefer are lavender, bergamot, chamomile, frankinsence and eucalyptus

  • Air out new furntiture - the glues, new fabrics, paints, construction materials all have volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are chemicals such as tolulene and benzene. So when you buy a new sofa or armchair, know this: It will emit VOCs, more heavily at first and then taper off
